I just reviewed the proposed orthosis standards and have an issue that I would appreciate feedback and support on from members.
I would like the direction that only members dispense the devices be removed. It is reasonable that orthotics be evaluated by members throughout the process as proposed. The proposed standard leaves in the ability to delegate to a trained individual the ability to actually take a scan or impression under our scrutiny and evaluation. This same approach can reasonably be applied to the dispensing of the device.
The actual dispensing of the device, once the member assures that it is the appropriate device from the lab can easily be handled by a trained assistant. They can assure that it is trimmed adequately to fit the footgear (previously discussed with the member and assistant).
Instructions can be given as to break-in. A follow-up visit would then be given with the member to assess the efficacy of the devices and decide on whatever adjustments and/or therapies are required.
This approach is not only reasonable but is a more efficient use of practitioner expertise, time and resources.
I could send my thoughts to COCOO as an individual, but would hope that the addition of other members' voices as well as the OPMA, would be more effective. As well, there may be other concerns that can be added as others read the proposed changes.
