Eliminating Heel Pain with Taping

I have a patient that I have treated for chronic heel pain with orthotics and shockwave over the last 2 years. Pain improved by 80 % but there was still some residual typical plantar fasciitis heel pain on the right foot. She came in this week with complete resolution of her pain. She found an online video ( she is an OR nurse ) that showed taping her 1st proximal phalanx  with slight distraction into a position parallel to the metatarsal and then a single piece of tape along the medial aspect of the first metatarsal to the proximal aspect of the arch just distal to the calcaneus . Pain is completely gone with this method and when she isn't taped , some of the pain comes back again. I don't understand the mechanics of how this works . Thoughts ? Anybody have any experience or links to share ?

    Hi Irv

She may have Functional hallux limitus and taping the toe in a better alignment could be allowing it to dorsiflex better at toe-  off.

Have her stand barefoot and see how many degrees of passive dorsiflexion she has at the 1st MPJ.  If it is very little then I would do a manipulation to free up the joint and add a kinetic wedge to the orthotic.

    Regards

    Steve
